Common sorrel leaf, SEM2008
» Description
Common sorrel leaf. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a common sorrel (Rumex acetosa) leaf. Two stomata (leaf pores, brown rings) can be seen. Stomata are the site of gaseous exchange in a plant. The opening and closing of the stomata is controlled by semi-circular guard cells, which swell and become turgid to close the openings. Magnification: x450 when printed at 10 centimetres tall. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/STEFAN DILLER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY) |
